Marrakech to the south

After the High Atlas Mountain range lays a mysterious, surreal and stunning landscape. This is the heart of old Morocco – the pre Sahara desert. It’s like stepping back in time into an all forgotten world; a world of fortified villages, Berber castles (Kasbahs) and abandoned Foreign Legion outposts. The Sahara region is where you’ll find one of the most diverse and dramatic landscapes in Morocco.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech

Transfer to the hotel in the centre of the city.You can spend the afternoon visiting Marrakech.

Day 2: Marrakech – Ouarzazate (208 Km)

Departure from your hotel at 9 o’clock, Ouarzazate road up to the Tichka pass (2200m), then track along the high atlas to Telouet. Visit of Telouet Kasbah, old residence of the Glaoui who use to be the Marrakech Pacha. Lunch is a nice restaurant aboard a river. After lunch 3 hours tracks into the high Atlas taking the old caravan track and crossing barbarian villages. Arrival in Ait Ben Haddou, the most beautiful fortified village (Ksar) in Morocco, here were made movies such as James Bond, Nil diamond, Lawrence from Arabia, Gladiator. Overnight in a Hotel.

Day 3: Ouarzazate – Merzouga (360 Km)

After the morning breakfast departure around 8 o’clock to Skoura palms fields, visit of the beautiful architectural Emridil Kasbah, then we will continue across the Roses Valley and the thousand Kasbahs road up to El Kella the city of roses flowers and perfume. Arrival into the Todra gorges for the lunch time and visit. After lunch we will take the road to Erfoud, city very well known for the fossils. Visit of a museum of fossils. Then road to Rissani, this city was known at the middle age as the city of Sijilmassa. Rissani was the halt for the caravan coming from the black Afriqua, it’s also the city where is coming the actual royal dynasty. Overnight in a Nomadic Bivouac.

Day 4: Merzouga – Zagora (250km)

Passing by Alnif (Trilobites), then Tazzarine, visit of Tamlet drawing and Zagora. Overnight in a Hotel.

Day 5: Zagora – Marrakech (350 km)

Starting time at 9 o’clock to join for the full morning the Draa track crossing the villages and the rich palm fields all along the Draa river. Lunch in a beautiful Kasbah at the village of Tamnougalt. Afternoon, road to Marrakech passing by Ouarzazate and the Tifoultoute Kasbah. Back to your hotel in Marrakech around 7 p.m.
